AI for Good: Why We Teach Ethics Alongside Code

Every camp day at Masterly Space includes a technology block — coding, robotics, or AI tools. But the block that matters just as much sits right next to it: the conversation about what that technology is actually for.

Skill without judgment isn’t the goal

It’s easy to teach a ten-year-old to build a chatbot. It’s harder, and more important, to teach them to ask whether the chatbot should exist, who it might mislead, and what happens when it gets something wrong. That second conversation is what we mean by AI for Good, and it’s built into the curriculum from day one, not bolted on afterward.

Our AI and coding instructors are graduate students from top Canadian universities, working under the supervision of practising AI scientists. That supervision isn’t just for technical accuracy — it’s so the ethical framing stays grounded in how these tools actually get used and misused in the real world.

What this looks like day to day

In practice, it means campers don’t just finish a project and move on. They talk through who their project could help, who it could leave out, and what a responsible version of it looks like. It’s a small habit, repeated often, and it’s the habit we’re actually trying to build.
